Best Practice Spotlight: St. Louis Region Behavioral Health Placement Process

December 12, 2023 10:25 AM - Close to 1,200 team members from across SSM Health gathered virtually on Aug. 30 to learn about innovative best practices for their professions at the 2023 SSM Health Symposium: Celebrating Clinical and Operational Excellence. Now in its third year, this special event challenged our thinking and inspired us with the great work happening within our health ministry.

Participants also had the opportunity to learn from colleagues from around the system as they presented the work they have done to develop or advance best practices in their respective clinical or operational domains. Nine individuals and/or teams presented during the symposium, including Jessica Bangert, MHA, BSN, RN, CEN, Continuous Improvement Manager Senior, and Michelle LimbergDHA, MSN, RN, CEN, Regional Director, Behavioral Health Service Line and Administrative Director of Nursing Operations from the St. Louis region.


Their presentation, “St. Louis Region Behavioral Health Placement Process,” described the team’s work to decrease the amount of time high-acuity behavioral health patients spend in the emergency room before being placed in a bed in one of the region’s five hospitals. They detailed how they created the Behavioral Health Unity Acuity Tool by examining the placement process to identify gaps, overlaps, and varying escalation processes in the region.
