Southern Illinois Perinatal Program
Improving Outcomes for Moms & Babies
SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - St. Louis, in conjunction with the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, serve as the designated Administrative Perinatal Center for the Southern Illinois Perinatal Network, part of the state of Illinois Regional Perinatal System.
The Southern Illinois Perinatal Program serves 10 birthing hospitals and two children’s hospitals that provide perinatal care, 39 non-maternity hospitals and 29 health departments in 32 counties in southern Illinois.
Our goal is to improve outcomes for pregnant women and their babies through education and quality improvement activities.

Level 0 Hospitals do not have maternity and delivery services available, but provide emergency services through their Emergency Departments when necessary.

Level I Hospitals care for women with uncomplicated pregnancies and no previous history that suggests potential difficulties. These hospitals care for well babies greater than 36 weeks gestation or whose weight is greater than 2500 grams (5lbs 8ozs).
There are currently no Level 1 hospitals in the Southern Illinois Perinatal Network
In addition to treating healthy pregnant women and newborns, Level II Hospitals provide care for pregnant women with some medical conditions or complications that arise after 32 weeks gestation.
These hospitals provide care for babies greater than or equal to 32 weeks gestation or whose weight is greater than or equal to 1500 grams (3 lbs, 5ozs). These babies may have mild to moderate respiratory problems, infection or low blood glucose levels.

In addition to the are provided by a Level II Hospital, these hospitals have additional resources to provide care for babies at 30 weeks or more gestation that weigh 1250 grams (2lbs, 12ozs) or more.
Memorial Hospital - Carbondale, IL
Memorial Hospital East – Shiloh, IL
Level III Hospitals provide perinatal outlined for all levels of care, as well as diagnosis and treatment of high-risk pregnancy and neonatal problems. These hospitals have a range of technical and sub-specialty support and accept maternal-fetal and neonatal transports from other levels of care.
