After School Program

AFTERSCHOOL AWARDS

student-awards

During these tough economic times, we remain committed to make positive changes in our communities. We think it is important to act now because our youth are especially at risk for the following reasons:

  • Many are failing to make grade level in K-12 schools throughout Carson, Lakewood, Cerritos and Long Beach.
  • Many come from lower-income households where there is little or no expectation to succeed in the classroom.
  • Many are overweight or obese, increasing risks for health problems, such as diabetes, and exacerbating poor academic performance, among other problems.
  • Their families do not have the resources to participate in (fee-based) after school enrichment activities, such as computer classes, personal tutoring and art classes.
  • There are few year-round after school programs or positive alternatives for most youth in our local neighborhoods. Given these realities, youth in the target area are often left unsupervised and drift into petty crimes and vandalism. Much worse, they join gangs and take drugs.

Our after school program was created three years ago to address many of the above concerns and to provide healthy and productive directions for our youth,; we have succeeded in helping more than 200 youth overcome problems at school, especially with their grades. At the same time, we have offered families that cannot afford fee-based tutoring services and ongoing, cost-free, workable alternatives.

At the center of our current twice weekly program are tutoring and mentoring services, parent/child mediation sessions, art and music activities, and fitness training. We offer classes that focus on basic skills and advanced math and English subjects, as well as on standardized test preparation classes for the Stanford 9 and school admissions tests for elementary and middle school students (ISEE and SSAT) and college admissions tests (SAT and ACT). Throughout, we closely monitor each student’s progress and study habits to promote better academic performance academic.

We are supported by a diverse and dedicated team of volunteers. They are all committed and accountable to making our program a positive learning environment for all our students.

Our program objectives are aimed at increasing student achievement, improving family relationships, enhancing social skills, and helping students develop their creativity and love of learning.

YOUTH ATHLETIC AWARDS

SPORTS PROGRAM

The SSS Good Smaraitan (SSSGS) youth sports programs are committed to providing a safe, fun, and skill-focused experience for kids between the ages of 10-21. Along with providing these services for kids, we also want to encourage healthy living and exercise in our diets. We also take pride in involving the parents to share in the experience. Our sports programs have been limited to volleyball, basketball and softball. We hope to expand our sports program to include rugby, tennis, soccer, football and sport-specific camps for all skill levels.

To serve in the new year, our Volleyball program will begin in late January 2012. The details are as follows:

Location: Hughes Middle School
Address: 3846 California Ave, Long Beach, CA 90807
Parking: Parking is on the Bixby Ave side of the building
Time: 5:30pm to 8:30pm

The SSS Good Samaritan would also like to express our gratitude and appreciation for all that have supported and continue to support our sports program. This year, we have added the LA84 Foundation to our group of sponsors. The LA84 Foundation has provided assistance to organized youth sports programs all over the U.S. along with providing training to our internal personnel to grow their skill set as coaches and instructors that will help instill the necessary leadership and sportsmanship attributes to our children.
